Today we spent all day with the orphan kids from the train station. We arrived there at about 9 so that we could observe the children arriving, showering, brushing their teeth, eating breakfast. The rule is that the children have to arrive by 10… this is to teach them rules and consequences. Then they are required to bathe, brush their teeth, and wash their clothes before they can eat. They have volunteers who do all these things with them. It is a learning experience for the boys as many have never learned these basic skills.
Then before they eat breakfast they pray together… it was amazing to witness this as all the boys knew to bow their heads and the words to say. After breakfast the boys headed upstairs for worship, most everything was sung in Bengali, but we recognized the tune of a few songs and were able to sing along in English, then we all prayed together and several of the boys even lead part of the prayer…. It was incredible to see God at work in them!
The volunteers who are running this program are incredible people and such an inspiration…. We got to ask them a lot of questions about their growing ministry and one was, where does your funding come from? How do you pay for the food for the kids…. Their response: “We are funded in faith.” They pray over everything…. They’re a great example for the rest of us!
Now, let me tell you about the driving conditions of India…. I have yet to fear my life here until I became a pedestrian on the city streets. Pedestrians do not have the right of way, in fact if you are in the way and a car is coming you better run faster because they do not slow down. Crossing the street is a lot like playing frogger…. You just have to run, maneuver around the cars and hope for the best. I have yet to see anyone use a turn signal, they just honk. It is so odd as the Indian way of life is laid back until you get in a car then its full speed.
Last night we went out to dinner…. It was so great to try some authentic Indian food, it is amazing! Never thought I would love Indian food so much!
