If I haven’t said it already, let me say it again… it is hot here! My body, which loves the 65 degree and sunny days at home in Seattle, is not accustomed to this. Each day is about 90 degrees and humid. We have been caught in a couple thunder showers since being here and cherish the moments when the sun comes out. J Today I had some free time so I did some homework in the sliver of sun that we had this afternoon… I am working on a sun tan as my white legs are blinding.
To get around the city we ride around in sauntauws (not sure on the spelling). Basically this is a truck taxi with benches in the back. We can fit all 10 members of our team in one and get around at suprising speeds. (Mom – do not worry we will not be riding in trains.)
I do have to say that I LOVE the local food…. The more I travel the more I discover this to be a trend. I have been eating a lot of traditional pad thai, mangos, and papaya, and sweet sticky rice. However we have to be careful not to eat fresh veggies or drink the water, which is a challenge as the veggies here are bright in color and look so ripe and flavorful.
Tonight I taught customer service skills as a part of a sustainable business model to women who are moving through this program. Working with a translator was difficult and a rewarding challenge. It was so encouraging to see the women smiling and engaging in group discussion even though I couldn’t communicate directly with them. My first few days here I observed examples of good customer service and bad customer service and shared those examples to convey my message – this seemed to really help communicate the key concepts. Plus it was fun to be able to share some of what I learned and experienced while I worked at Starbucks. I am already looking forward to teaching again later in the week.
The look in these ladies eyes (who have been rescued) is so encouraging. Their eyes are full of light, life, and hope. They are thirsty for knowledge to improve their second chance in life in a healthy way. This is such a stark contrast from what we see in the eyes of the ladies on the street. Beneath all the filth of Pattaya is so much beauty that has yet to be uncovered… gorgeous beaches, warm blue water, tasty food, and beautiful people with a spirit of hope – there is light in this darkness. To know there is hope even if one life is changed is enough to motivate me each day.
Tonight we are headed out to the beaches where the lady boys and young men are forced into acts of prostitution.
Sending love to you all – thanks for your support and many prayers. God is at work here!
